Lancaster Pride Hosts First Ever Film Festival

Lancaster Pride Fest is excited to announce the first ever Lancaster Pride Film Festival. Slated for June 19-25, the festival features two classic queer films—How to Survive a Plague and Kiki—for public viewing at Zoetropolis Art House, 315 W. James Street, Lancaster. The community is invited to enjoy both films, as well as one night of special events created to complement the movies.

How To Survive a Plague captures the desperation and power that defined the peak existence of ACT UP, a legendary activist group whose dedication to fighting HIV occurred in the late 1980s. The movie traces the journey of ACT UP and their partner organization, TAG, in New York City as they take on the immense and government-ignored work of fighting AIDS. The activists become experts in politics, science, and public health. Far from just a political movie, How To Survive a Plague shows the activists’ personal struggles as they confront their own HIV+ statuses.

Just like How To Survive a Plague, Kiki gives viewers an intimate look at queer life in New York City. The film focuses on young queer and trans people of color who are part of the underground competitive dance scene in NYC. Many of these young people have faced devastating homophobia in their lives, resulting in them being kicked out of their homes and struggling to survive. They find solace and community in their dance groups, where they focus on “voguing” competitions.

On Friday, June 23rd, Lancaster Pride Fest welcomes Kiki star Chi Chi Mizrahi to our own community. He will host a special night in three parts: Q&A, performance, and dance party. Immediately after the showing of Kiki that night, attendees will have the opportunity to ask Mizrahi questions. Mizrahi will display his dance skills, and community members can join him and dance together until 2 am.
